Communication will increase your understanding of the project, present an opportunity to exchange ideas and in the end, help make the experience a positive one for all involved. Our mortgage professionals have created a list of tips to help facilitate communication between you and your remodeler during your remodeling process.

Exchange contact information

Homeowners should meet with their remodeler and exchange contact information. Be sure to provide the contact the remodeler should use for daily decisions and after-hour emergencies. For example, the remodeler may provide you with the lead carpenter’s information since he or she will be on the job every day of the remodel.

Designate a backup

Secondly, homeowners and remodelers should designate backups for each of their contacts. There may be a time when a situation needs to be handled immediately and the original contact isn’t available. Be sure to designate a reliable back up contact who can handle making important decisions quickly.

Leave messages

Create a place in your home where the designated contacts can leave messages for each other. Keep a notebook and pen in that area to exchange messages.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to speak up. If you are uncertain about any aspect of the project, say so. Either let your designated contact person or the remodeler know about any questions or concerns you have regarding the remodeling project.

While communication is extremely important during a remodel, our team of mortgage experts has a few additional tips and tricks to help your remodel run as smooth as possible.

Prepare yourself for the disruption of daily routines. Remodeling your home impacts your personal space which can often lead to a feeling of lost control. Instead of worrying about what you can’t do during the process, look at the progress being made.

Consider what area of the home is being remodeled and prepare for the inconveniences it will cause. Large remodeling projects can turn your home upside down. Before beginning the project, think about what will change once you no longer have access to that particular area. For example, if you are remodeling your kitchen, think about where and how you can set up a temporary cooking area and dishwashing station.

Plan an escape

Designate an area that you can escape too when the chaos and commotion becomes too much. Select an area that will absolutely in no way, shape or form be affected by the remodel.

Guard against dust

Remodeling projects can get super messy. Guard against dust by sealing off doorways, covering floors and removing anything that may get ruined by dust.

Laugh it off

Our last helpful tip for remodeling you home is to maintain a sense of humor. Keep in mind that certain things such as the weather causing a delay, or the construction materials not being delivered on time, are out of your control and the best thing to do is laugh rather than let it upset you.
